On 8, 9 and 10 May 2017 the next Beer Education (level 1) in the Southern Netherlands will start. It is an initiative of StiBON Beer Education in collaboration with the Gulpener BrouwLokaal. The training will take place in the new Gulpener BrouwLokaal and there is room for no more than 24 participants. After passing the exam you may call yourself StiBON- beer ambassador general beer knowledge level 1. The course is given by teachers who have already proved their professional qualities and skills time and time again; Marco Lauret, Jan Wolfs, Henri Reuchlin, Steven van den Berg, Arvid Bergström and André Köppen. Overnight stays are offered via Hotel Gulpen. This hotel is situated at a 5 minutes’ walk from the Gulpener BrouwLokaal. The overnight stays can be booked here.

Marco Lauret
Marco is chairman of the Foundation for Beer Education in the Netherlands and brewer at Duits & Lauret, one of the successful new breweries in the Netherlands. The brewery has its home in Fort Everdingen where soon also a tasting room and overnight stay facilities will be created.

Steven Van den Berg
Steven is master brewer at the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij. Already during his studies in Nijmegen he was an active amateur brewer. After an education at the Hogeschool in Gent he was a researcher, teacher, quality manager and owner-director of a small Limburg brewery. By now at Gulpener he has already been successful with a number of tasteful experiments.

Jan Wolfs
Jan is treasurer of the Foundation for Beer Education in the Netherlands (StiBON) and former brewer, a.o. at the Leckere and De Molen. Currently Jan brews at the Klein Duimpje brewery. He also has his own consultancy agency Wolfs Brouwadvies that advices breweries on issues such as quality and hygiene.

Arvid Bergström
Arvid is a certified StiBON beer sommelier and co-founder of the Guild of Beer sommeliers. He is the author of cookbooks featuring beer. Before that Arvid was a chef at different breweries such as Kompaan and De Pelgrim and he is owner of catering company Koken met Krullen.

Henri Reuchlin
Henri is coordinator of StiBON beer education and chairman of the European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU). He is also active as chairman of the Week of the Dutch Beer, board member of the Dutch Beer Challenge and editor of Bier! Magazine .

André Köppen
André is the manager of the Gulpener BrouwLokaal, in 2007 he completed his education as beer sommelier at the Doemens Academy in Munich. Together with Derek Walsh André developed the AnDer1.0 beer tasting glass

Content of beer education (level 1)
During six daily periods of four hours these fully professional craftsmen reveal to you the secrets of beer in an open and interactive way. Special attention is paid to the importance of hospitality and etiquette. The full program can be found on the website of StiBON.

During the training the following topics will be dealt with:

  • Theory and practice of beer tasting
  • Brewing process
  • Ingredients and health
  • Beer treatment and storage
  • Legislation, history and label
  • Beer at the table

Per lesson always six to eight beers are tasted, the emphasis lies on Dutch beers and on foreign beers available in the Netherlands. The circumstances in the Gulpener BrouwLokaal may be called perfect: both the glasses, the technique of pouring and the temperature of the beer meet the highest standards. After each daily period a review is used to assess participant’s mastering of the topic. The training is concluded with a StiBON-certified exam in Amsterdam on 12 June 2017.

Cost

The course fee is € 495,- excl. VAT, and includes the examination fee. Application is possible via www.stibon.nl and the course fee should be paid in advance. After payment you will receive the course book at home. If the course, due to unforeseen circumstances should not take place, then the course fee will be refunded immediately.
